What is a long snapper?

A long snapper is a specialized position in American football whose primary role is to accurately snap the ball to the holder or punter during field goal attempts, extra point attempts, or punts. Long snappers are typically responsible for executing a "long snap," which is a snap that travels a longer distance than a typical snap from the center to the quarterback.

Long snappers must have exceptional accuracy, timing, and consistency in snapping the ball, as any mistake could result in a botched play and potentially cost their team points. They also need to have the strength and agility to quickly get into position after snapping the ball and then either block an opposing player or cover the punt or field goal attempt.

Long snappers are often underappreciated and overlooked compared to other positions on the football field, but they play a crucial role in the success of special teams plays. Many NFL teams have a designated long snapper on their roster, and some long snappers have long and successful careers in the league.
